Founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American automotive brand by the time it was discontinued in 2004. Olds is responsible for some of the most important engineering milestones in the industry: the first volume-produced car (the Curved Dash Olds), the Hydra-Matic automatic transmission in 1940, the high-compression Rocket V8 in 1949, and the front-wheel-drive Toronado in 1966. On the performance side, the 4-4-2, Hurst/Olds, and W-30 cars are some of the most sophisticated muscle cars of the era.

Most Oldsmobile restoration projects center on the 4-4-2 and Cutlass, the 88 and 98 full-size cars, the Toronado personal-luxury coupe, the Vista Cruiser wagon, and the Starfire and Jetfire.
