American Motors Corporation was formed in 1954 from the merger of Nash-Kelvinator and Hudson, and for more than three decades AMC carved out a niche as Detroit's scrappy fourth automaker. The company built its early reputation on the compact Rambler, then surprised the muscle-car world in the late 1960s with the AMX two-seater and the Mark Donohue-developed Javelin Trans-Am racers. AMC also produced quirky icons like the Pacer and Gremlin, the long-running Eagle 4WD wagons that predicted the modern crossover by decades, and a wide range of practical family sedans.
