The Ford Escort (North American, 1981–2003) was Ford's compact economy car, replacing the Pinto. The 1981–1990 first-generation Escort was a front-wheel-drive world-platform car, while the 1991–1996 second generation shared its platform with the Mazda Protegé. The Escort GT and the Carroll Shelby–edition Escort GT (rare) are the most sought-after enthusiast variants.
